Duct Tape Nerd Life

Here I am wandering around at a New Year's party when this big pink dress goes by. I have to do a double take because my mind cannot believe what I just saw. The dress is made entirely out of duct tape. Selea Nielsen has been collecting rolls of duct tape since her middle school years and started making small items during that time. As her collection grew bigger so did her projects.

After gushing over Selea's fantastic pink Ciel dress at the party I found out she was going to make Princess Agitha from the Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Warriors video game. There is a lot of detail that has to go into that character and I must say, months later when she debuted the costume, I was very impressed.

Selea started cosplaying about four years ago but she has been collecting duct tape for far longer. She even has the Guinness World Record for Largest Duct Tape Collection, which she received this year. Selea is continuing to collect duct tape and create fun and unique costumes.

Halloween Contest Feature

Happy Halloween! It is that time of year to don a costume and eat lots of tasty treats! The entries for this contest are really creative and fun. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Professor McGonagall First up I would love to feature my mom! I was so excited when she said she wanted to enter the contest. Even more so because this costume has been a dream of hers for a very long time. She is Professor Minerva McGonagall from the Harry Potter series.

My mom chose this costume because one, it is a witch and my mom can cackle, like really cackle like a real witch. The other reason is that Professor McGonagall is the coolest witch in the series and she is a strong character. My mom has always admired her.
How was the costume made? I made it for her. I am especially proud of the hat, which has a regular store bought hat underneath it. My mom found the black shirt and added her own brooch trinket which really made the costume pop. I love her! (I might have to record her cackling for eve…

Halloween Contest!!

Happy Halloween readers and cosplayers! I am hosting a mini contest here on the site to celebrate this awesome holiday and to thank all of you who have liked my Facebook page and read this blog. The VFire Cosplay Facebook page has reached over 1,000 likes!! And I didn't notice until a few days ago!! The blog also has over 13,000 views as of this month as well! Thank you!

The Prize
Now to celebrate with a contest and a fabulous prize. Since the convention season has ended here in Utah it looks like everyone is planning out next year's cosplays. I would like to offer my assistance. When planning out a costume I usually create character builds with sketches. I will draw out the character from the front, back, sides and in different layers if their clothing requires it. Sometimes it is difficult to get a full turn around of a character and we spend time watching the anime or playing the game to get every detail. The prize for the contest will be one character build of the winner…

Rou and Squats Cosplay Majora's Mask

It is NDK 2014 and I am wondering around the convention when I run into the coolest Majora's Mask cosplayers I have ever met. Rou is a senior in high school and is about to graduate and start the fun adventure of college. Squats is a junior in high school and has an infectious love of cosplay. I really like how both of these girls inspire each other to do awesome things from cosplay to artwork.

Squats started cosplaying in 2012 as Dave from the web-comic, Homestuck, when she went to an anime meet up at the mall. She fell in love with cosplay and has been going strong ever since. Rou started cosplaying this year as Krista from the popular series Attack on Titan. Squats introduced her to cosplay by giving her the signature jacket from the series. Together they decided to compete for the first time at NDK 2014 as Link and Skull Kid from the awesome game, Majora's Mask. I am very happy they said yes to coming out and being a part of a small photo shoot. I then had the idea to ask …

Eleph an Faerie - Taking on World Cosplay Summit

We have talked about World Cosplay Summit (WCS) before, but this time we have a fresh set of eyes going into the competition. The dynamic team, Eleph an Faerie, are beginning their journey with WCS next week at Nan Desu Kan (NDK) in Denver, Colorado. WCS is a tough challenge; the Olympics of cosplay. Many costumers every year try for the spot of being the representative of the United States Team and going to Japan to compete against other countries (And if you did not hear, Green Jello Cosplay did just that this year!)

Eleph an Faerie are made up of two very talented cosplayers, Genius Program (Gen) and Airedail. Gen has been sewing and creating costumes since 2009. Airedail started about five or six years ago creating skits and competing at contests. They teamed up this past year after testing out how well they worked together. Apparently, they do very well as a team since they took home the Best in Show prize at Anime Oasis 2014. Combining Gen's sewing skills and Airedail's …

August Hiatus and Fun News!!!

BIG NEWS! The Cosplay Stitch and Seam will be on hiatus for the month of August. During this time VFire will be preparing for a new school term to start and making TWO new cosplays. Yes, TWO. She is insane... but it will be worth it. You can watch the progress and inasanity on her facebook page while you wait for updates. :D But first, the latest project that she finished.

Now I don't usually post a whole lot on the blog about my own cosplays but I am really proud of this one. I posted a progress pic a long time ago for Sheik and here is the finished product:

Real leather armor, spandex chain maille print (I said screw it to real chain maillle and it added a cool video game vibe to it), and the bow actually works as a 15/20 pound pvc pipe bow. I also had the chance to work on some metal working and melted pewter and aluminum for the project.

So the next two projects? MUCH simpler, yet still a little complex. I am planning on assisting two cosplayers with their epic costumes by bei…

Epic Mini Feature Part 3 Final!

The last two mini features are here for you to read. I had so much fun talking with so many talented costumers at Fantasy con. Enjoy!

Nathan, or the Salt Lake Psycho, is a Borderlands fan to the max. He spent three months perfecting the movements and voice of the insane Psycho of Borderlands 2. Nathan was fun to talk to and he totally owns the this character. His practice and hard work totally paid off.

The boots are just old rubber steel-toed that I've had for a few years and I painted to toes with a silver rattle can. The pants I found at the D.I. for 4.00 and I removed the cargo pocket cording to make the belt loops. The armor pieces are expanded aluminum wrapped with electrical tape and held on by elastic strapping and denim thread (for durability). The mask was a 3.00 masquerade knock off from Zurchers covered in masking tape and acrylic paint for a fabric look.

Next up we have "Here to Save the World," a group of cosplayers who came from out of state and totally roc…

Epic Mini Post Part 2

And it is indeed epic! Fantasy con really brought out some crazy talented cosplayers. Without further ado, check out all the fun costumes!!! All non bold text is the costumer's own words and information they sent me.

First up we have Diane in her original character Kalias Sondrie (Pronounced Kal-ee-us Sawn-dry) Her costume is commissioned but the thought process and imagination put into making this character real is amazing. Plus this girl can fight in this! No seriously, she knows how to fight.

Background Of Character Creation: Kalias Sondrie is an original character who was created approximately four years ago. She is the heroine of a book series that Diane is in the process of writing. The character has been worn at a number of conventions, renaissance fairs, and other public events. Kalias was a special invited guest and the ‘champion of light’ at the 2013 Otherworlds Festival in Phoenix, Arizona. Diane does not consider herself a furry (though she is friend to many furs), b…

Fantasy Con Mini Feature!! Part 1

I apologize for this one being up so late. I usually try and get the mini features up as close to the convention as is possible. Regardless, there are some fantastic costumers that I met and some really awesome new friends as well! I am doing this feature in a few parts so I can talk about the costumers in more depth to make up for it.

Fantasy Con was a whole different experience from any convention I had ever been to. They had battle arenas, dancers, fire dancers, musicians, performers, glass blowing, blacksmiths, and so much more. (I was a bum and missed most of these because I was in contests, but my siblings got to see a lot and I cannot wait for next year!!!)

First up on the mini feature is my little brother!!! My youngest brother, Veyron, has been to a few conventions with me but he has never competed with me on the big stage. We decided a few months before the convention to try and make a Wyvern costume for him. We came up with a skit and took off with the idea! Please note: I …

Contest Winner: Pastel-Colored Cosplay!!

Pastel-Colored Cosplay, or Sam, was the winner of my first ever contest and it was so fun to see her smiling face at Fantasy Con. Sam is a very talented costumer who always has a sweet smile and knack for helping others grin and relax. She has a ton of fun creating costumes and hanging out with friends, whether it be at conventions, photo shoots, or just chilling.

Sam may appear quiet when you first meet her but she is a passionate and lively girl. She puts her heart and soul into her work. Sam creates characters from video games and anime shows that she can relate with and that she holds dear to herself.

Interview with Pastel-Colored Cosplay
How long have you been cosplaying and how did you start?

I first officially started to cosplay back in 2006, for the second year of Anime Banzai. I'd tried to poorly imitate character costumes before that, but...yeahhh... Let's just say there's a reason why no pictures of those attempts …
